Selecting A Training Program

If it has been a while since you completed school, or if you never graduated, you may find you need additional training in order to compete in today’s job market.

Workforce Solutions Texoma can help you identify the training that is right for you and may be able to assist with paying for your training.

There are many factors involved in identifying your best training match. One of the most important factors is your interest in a particular job. Our staff can help you identify your preferred interests, and suggest matching jobs. Then together, we find the training program that best fits your needs.

There are a number of occupations available for training assistance, but making the right choice means selecting a career with expanding job opportunities and good wages. Workforce Solutions Texoma keeps up with the hottest careers and can provide Labor Market Information to help you make your career choice.

Assistance in Paying for Training

If you meet certain income eligibility guidelines, or have recently been laid-off, Workforce Solutions Texoma may be able to help pay for tuition, books, and other training-related costs for up to two years.  However, Workforce Solutions Texoma  will only be able to provide training assistance if you go to school for specific Target Occupations.

Workforce Solutions Texoma – Training Assistance Process

Step 1:  Review the Target Occupations List to make sure the training you are selecting is one Texoma can sponsor.

Steps 2 & 3: Complete the Program Screening Application and view the WIOA Training Orientation Video at:  Workforce Solutions Texoma Training Orientation

Step 4:  Your Workforce Solutions Texoma Career Specialist will contact you to complete the eligibility process.  You will need to provide required eligibility documents to your Career Specialist at this step.

Step 5:  Decide which training program and school you are going to enroll in by viewing the State of Texas’s statewide list to make sure your training program is approved:

Note:  If you are undecided, your Career Specialist can assist you with this step.

Step 6:   Continue working with your Career Specialist to complete the enrollment process.

Anyone who has ever been laid-off knows it can be one of the most stressful times in your life. Workforce Solutions Texoma can help you get through this stressful time, while helping you find your next job.

When you were employed, you went to your job every day.  Now that you are unemployed, your new job is to look for your next job every day.  You can report to the workforce center regularly and take advantage of all the services offered.  Looking for your new job daily will increase your chances of success in locating that new job quickly.

So, if you have been laid-off, start by contacting your local Workforce Center and let us help you. 

Here are the steps you can take:

  1. Register for Work through

Step 1:  Register for Work

One of the first things you need to do is register for work at:  In fact, if you want to qualify for Unemployment Insurance, you’re required to register in within 3 business days of being laid off.

Registering in gives you access to thousands of jobs.  Workforce Solutions Texoma recommends you set aside about an hour for the initial registration process.  Once you’ve completed your initial registration, make an appointment with your local Workforce Center and have our trained staff assist you in finessing your registration to generate the best job match for you. resources:

  • Registration Video This video contains instructions on creating your Application. You will see there are three parts to completing your Application so you can be matched to available jobs in the system:
  1. Initial Sign-On: You will create your username and password (do not forget these) and add in your basic information.
  2. Wagner-Peyser: Documentation of specific information such as education, Veteran status, employment information
  3. Creating a Resume: This is an important section as employers you match to will be able to see your resume.  Much of this information will be pre-populated by the information you entered in the two previous sections.  You will want this information to accurately represent your skills, job history, and credential information.  Note that you will not be able to match to available jobs until you follow all the steps including creating your Resume.

Step 2. Apply for Unemployment Insurance Benefits

Unemployment Insurance is provided through payments made by your employer to the State of Texas.  It is for individuals who have been laid off from work through no fault of their own.  If you have worked and earned wages, you may qualify for benefits.

Step 3. Deal With the Emotions of Losing Your Job

Step 4. Look at Your Finances

One of the most important things to consider when you’re laid off is how you will continue to meet your financial obligations.  In addition to your monthly bills, you also need to take care of your basic needs of food, shelter, clothing and transportation.  Taking a look at your finances can also help answer the question of how much money you need to make in your next job.  Since there is a possibility you will have to start your next job making less than you were making at your last job, this is important information.

Step 5. Find Your Next Job

There are several things to consider when you start looking for your next job.  Do you have the training and skills to find another job quickly, or will you need some training?  Are you interested in changing careers?  Workforce Solutions Texoma can help you consider all of these options.

Consider working Part-Time

Did your job go overseas?

If you’ve lost your job due to a layoff, downsizing, or plant closure, and if that job went overseas, you may be eligible for special services under the Trade Adjustment Assistance Act (TAA). Access information for this program via this link:  TAA Information

If you were 50 years of age, or older, when you were laid off, pay particular attention to information about Alternative Trade Adjustment Assistance (ATAA) which is on the same page as the link above: TAA Information.

A lot of people think of Workforce Solutions Texoma as the “Unemployment Office,” but that’s not the case. The State of Texas moved the responsibility of Unemployment Insurance claims to several call centers located throughout the state.

Workforce Solutions Texoma cannot sign you up or answer detailed questions about Unemployment Insurance. However, your local Workforce Center is available to assist you in searching for new employment after you have filed for Unemployment Insurance.
