So, if you have been laid-off, start by contacting your local Workforce Center and let us help you.

Here are the steps you can take:

  1. Register for Work through WorkInTexas.com
  2. Apply for Unemployment Insurance Benefits
  3. Deal With the Emotions of Losing Your Job
  4. Look at Your Finances
  5. Find Your Next Job

Step 1:  Register for Work

One of the first things you need to do is register for work at: WorkInTexas.com LogoWorkInTexas.com.  In fact, if you want to qualify for Unemployment Insurance, you’re required to register in WorkInTexas.com within 3 business days of being laid off.

Registering in WorkInTexas.com gives you access to thousands of jobs.  Workforce Solutions Texoma recommends you set aside about an hour for the initial registration process.  Once you’ve completed your initial registration, make an appointment with your local Workforce Center and have our trained staff assist you in finessing your registration to generate the best job match for you.

WorkInTexas.com resources:

  • WorkInTexas.com Registration Video This video contains instructions on creating your WorkInTexas.com Application. You will see there are three parts to completing your Application so you can be matched to available jobs in the system:
  1. Initial Sign-On: You will create your username and password (do not forget these) and add in your basic information.
  2. Wagner-Peyser: Documentation of specific information such as education, Veteran status, employment information
  3. Creating a Resume: This is an important section as employers you match to will be able to see your resume.  Much of this information will be pre-populated by the information you entered in the two previous sections.  You will want this information to accurately represent your skills, job history, and credential information.  Note that you will not be able to match to available jobs until you follow all the steps including creating your Resume.

Note:  See additional details on using WorkInTexas in our Looking for a Job section located above on this page.

Step 2. Apply for Unemployment Insurance Benefits

Unemployment Insurance is provided through payments made by your employer to the State of Texas.  It is for individuals who have been laid off from work through no fault of their own.  If you have worked and earned wages, you may qualify for benefits.

Information on the Unemployment Insurance filing process can be located at the Texas Workforce Commission’s Unemployment Benefits Services page.

Additional information on how to apply for Unemployment Benefits can be located on the state’s Unemployment Benefits Services page or here in our Unemployment Insurance Section.

Step 3. Deal With the Emotions of Losing Your Job

Workforce Solutions Texoma understands the emotional impact of losing your job, and will be there to assist you if it happens. To find out more about the services available to you, contact your local Workforce Center.  Below are a couple of resources to help you through this difficult time:

Step 4. Look at Your Finances

One of the most important things to consider when you’re laid off is how you will continue to meet your financial obligations.  In addition to your monthly bills, you also need to take care of your basic needs of food, shelter, clothing and transportation.  Taking a look at your finances can also help answer the question of how much money you need to make in your next job.  Since there is a possibility you will have to start your next job making less than you were making at your last job, this is important information.

Workforce Solutions Texoma does not endorse, or recommend, any specific credit or debt solution.  You should do research, talk with people you trust, and come to your own conclusion about the solution that is best for you and your family.  Some resources you might want to consider are:

You may want to look at credit counseling, budgeting, and consider seeing if you qualify for financial assistance.  Some resources that can help in these areas include:

Step 5. Find Your Next Job

There are several things to consider when you start looking for your next job.  Do you have the training and skills to find another job quickly, or will you need some training?  Are you interested in changing careers?  Workforce Solutions Texoma can help you consider all of these options.

Consider working Part-Time

Workforce Solutions Texoma highly recommends you consider working part-time while receiving Unemployment Insurance Benefits.  Not only does this help give you a chance to network, but it means more money in your pocket.  Review the benefits of working part-time while receiving unemployment through the Benefits of Working Part-Time flyer.
